I am now, a full fledged fashion designer and if you ask, what inspires me? i say, "life and the people in it." this post is dedicated to 2 designers, who inspired me to bend the rules, rebel and shock the living daylights out of people. im sure some existing fashion designers can relate to me when it comes to being inspired by these two designers. there is so much that i can blog about these 2 amazing individuals but in this post, ive picked specific collections that, well, shocked the living daylights out of me and basically made me a convert.
All Hail
Alexander Mcqueen & Hussein Chalayan
Alexander Mcqueen
Alexander Mcqueen, aka, "enfant terrible" is the hooligan of English fashion. before the need of vast income to sustain his career, he basically doesnt give a flying crap about what the audiences think. his collections, always made up of intricate details, unconventional materials, romantic-meets-gothic. the images are video stills from the finale of his S/S 1999 collection. a model stood on a rotating platform while two robots take turns spraying her white dress with black and yellow paint. the collection was called "untitled". here, human meets machine, producing the most intriguing and fascinating result.
pls do check out this video and be prepared to choke on your own breath.

this is my and some of my fellow designers fav collection from AMQ. his S/S2001 collection. never short of theatrics, his runway was a glass cube, that when lighted up, revealed to be a mental hospital where models, play the role of patients. with their head covered with headpieces made up of stuffed eagles and puzzles. one word that describes this collection and its aesthetic -
surreal. the images above are again, video stills from his s/s2001 collection. this scene is from the finale of the runway. where the cube that is in the middle of the runway opens up its glass walls and letting it shatter into millions of pieces on the floor, revealing a nude, pregnant woman, breathing from a mask which is connected to tubes while moths fly free.
to have your reality blown away into millions of pieces,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=st16Z2MujmUpls do check out this other video link ive put up. its another one of his inspiring shows.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5gY5DXrb48Hussein ChalayanHussein Chalayan was born in Turkey and moved to London where he studied design. i never knew about his existence untill a fellow designer showed me one of his runway video that left me on the verge of tears. this S/S 07 collection of his, when i watched it, all i could say with my jaw hanging was "oh, my, god."
he made his garments, those pieces of art, move and transform with the help of technology of course. from a 1800s dress into a 1920s flapper dress in a matter of minutes, clothes undo themselves, hemlines shorten and lengthened by itself, sleeves rolled and disappeared. basically this is the fashion version of transformers. no joke.
since this collection, he hasnt stopped incorporating technology into his garments. more things started to move and undo themselves. to me, he is the epitome of an innovator.
